Untitled Chapter focused on combat

This is something that is a little different than the things I’ve been posting. This is a piece from something I wrote a loooong time ago with some minor revisions and such by the me of today. The context is that it’s a bit of a borderlands based fanfiction series I started with a friend during high school. We had this idea of making it so we had characters who would end up meeting in places and becoming a group of vault hunters. Unfortunately, like most creative projects started when you’re young, it never really went anywhere and all I have is a few chapters out of a story. This is one of those chapters. As the title suggests, this is a very combat focused scene. For Alec, he isn’t experienced at all in combat and is trying a bit to prove himself. Part of what I want to achieve is showing just how slowed down things can get in the heat of battle while also showing the gradual exhaustion/mental fortitude involved in something as strenuous as this. As with all of the pieces I write and post here, I will accept any feedback, good or bad. If people want to see more, the best way is to comment and let me know what you think! Like every day, I will be back tomorrow with more!

A life size hologram of Borris, walked up to him, “SOLDIER, ARE YOU READY!”

Alec sarcastically saluted back, “Sir yes sir.”

Borris seemed satisfied with his answer and disappeared, in his place rose up a 10 second counter, Alec readied himself, he could swear that he felt the looks through the one way Windows installed.

Alec clicked back the hammer on his revolver…

He quickly scanned the battlefield and saw a large rock that would make a great piece of cover, he made a mental note…

He took the last few moments to emotionally centered himself, this would be intense

BEGIN!

A large dinging noise sounded and soon the sound of digistruction filled the room as Alec looked around and saw a large amount of stalkers, wave 1…

He sprung into action quickly killing a stalker just as it finished digistructing, he then made a beeline for the rock. He sprayed behind him as he ran towards the rock, he had two choices, he either climbs it or he runs around, running around seemed to be safer, he swiftly reloaded his revolver adrenaline kicking in as he dashed for the top of the rock. He killed another stalker with a swift bullet to the head, he used its corpse as a shield from the spikes thrown by the other stalkers. He was able to run to the top of the rock without encountering anything else. He pulled out the sniper, he wasn't by any means a distinguished marksman, but the stalkers moved slow enough for him, he quickly shot any stalker he could see, the electric element quickly disposing of their shields his first shots missed, it being a Hyperion sniper and all, but when he emptied the clip he could hit anything he saw.

Just as he was reloading a stalker came right up behind him and quickly pounced on him. He was caught off guard, dropping his sniper, it fell and bounced down the rock until it landed on the bottom, this wasn't good, he was able to wrest the stalked off easily enough and quickly killed it with his revolver. He started his descent, the stalkers had all lost their shields so their cloak was pretty much useless, he ran down shooting at a stalker whenever he got an opportunity. When he finally reached his sniper he was dismayed to find that the lenses of the scope were shattered during its rough fall. With some quick thinking he quickly tore off the scope from the tactical rail and threw it at the nearest stalker, stunning it. He used his sniper, now bereft of a scope and got a quick headshot on it. It only took a few more minutes to clean up the rest of the stalkers. He walked back to the starting zone panting, the adrenaline left him as quickly as it entered him, leaving him feeling drained for the next wave, not a good thing

The same 10 second timer popped up, and started counting down. A new scope slowly digistructed itself on his sniper, he could go up to to the rock again. The timer started again.

He prepped his revolver again

He felt sweat dripping all over his face, he was still breathing pretty hard

He took a deep breath and prepared for the worst

1...

BEGIN!

Another sound filled the room, he saw about seven threshes get digistructed before they burrowed straight into the ground. He was lucky that none of them were special ones. He had done plenty of research on the different types of enemies he might encounter, he was glad that they weren't throwing any of them at him right now.

He quickly dodged to the right as a thresher erupted out of the ground where he stood, he unloaded a full clip of the revolver into it, killing it instantly. He heard rumbling all around him, the rock would not be viable this time. He reloaded his revolver as fast as he could, but a revolver came out of the ground right in front of him, causing him to drop the revolver as he was knocked back. He looked on in horror as the revolver was eaten up by the thresher.

“Great” he thought, now he didn't have a secondary to his sniper.

He whipped out his sniper shooting the thresher, three shots resulted in it dropping dead. He looked around, he needed a vantage point so the threshers couldn't attack him. He ran, getting some no scopes on the threshers, but he never landed enough hits to actually kill one. A thresher came out of the ground in front of him and he shoved the barrel of his gun down its throat shooting its insides. He pulled out the gun from its throat watching it flop to the ground.  He brought it up to shoot at the other threshers now coming towards him, then suddenly he heard a fizzling noise and the blue lights on the gun signifying the elemental status turned off, that was worrying. He tried shooting it, but all that came out were normal bullets.

“crap” he thought, this gun was pretty useless without its elemental effect augmenting its damage output.

He quickly ran fumbling with the gun, it turned out that some of thresher’s guts had jammed up the electronics, he futile tried to clean them with his sleeves, he quickly stopped and he started rubbing it with his shirt, he must’ve have hit one of the sensible parts because a really ominous beeping noise came from the gun, he was knocked back as it released an electrical nova, much like the Maliwan shields, conveniently enough the threshers had all gathered around him ready to strike, but the nova completely annihilated them, killing the rest of them. He quickly stood up, he had no guns left, but he quickly realized that he had killed all of the stalkers.

“Thanks Hyperion…” He muttered under his breath.

A long ding signaled that he had completed his first run.

“New Record, CONGRATULATIONS!” Borris shouted at him, he looked to the large screen that would display his score. He got a solid 25634/30000, vastly ahead of Blake, who he knew now must hate him.

He heard clapping and turned to see General Juds walking up to him, “Son, that was the best run I have ever seen, and that’s saying a lot after the first week of recruits.”
