Board Game Club

I put approximately… no effort into this piece. This was something I wrote with a pretty strict time limit of… 15 minutes off of a random writing prompt I got. There is some kind of interesting story to be found here I feel so maybe I can do more with it. 15 minutes is definitely not enough… or maybe it is? Either way, here is the piece and I will be back tomorrow!

I woke up, dark and unsure of my surroundings. I quickly realized that I was blindfolded and started to shout for help.

Soon a voice pierced the darkness, “welcome to my home… I hope you enjoy the stay!”

It was cheerful, too cheerful. I began to fear for my life.

“What’s going on? Why am I here?”

“Why to play with me of course!”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I simply… want to play a game”

With that the blindfold came off and there I was. In a setting that I did not expect. There were many bright lights and a bunch of people were around me.

“What the…” I stared at the crowd dumbfounded.

“We’re the board game club and we were wondering if you wanted to join us for our meeting today!”

“Oh… I guess I’ll join…”

“So what’s your favorite board game?”

“I’m… not sure, I’ve never really played before…”

“Well we can certainly change that!”

Someone in the back of the room pulled out a vast array of board games, simple ones like parcheesi, monopoly, game of life to others that I didn’t even know existed. So many different colors, so many different shapes, the sensation was very overwhelming. I took a shot in the dark and just pointed almost randomly at one.

“Settlers of catan! I love that one.”

Whew I thought to myself.

“While I set this up, let me untie you.”

“Hey so…” I asked nervously, “why did you kidnap me in the first place?”

“Well you see… no one really wants to join the club so we had to resort to some… unusual methods to get new membership”

“Sure… I totally get that…” I Really didn’t

“So, you said you didn’t know how to play Settlers of Catan?”

“Not really no.”

“Alright well it’s really simple…” they quickly launched into a tirade of rules and explanations that it felt like I was back in high school listening to subjects and things that I couldn’t follow even if I tried.I looked around the room and saw that all the other members were listening intently, understanding everything perfectly.

“... and that’s how you win! See easy!” They looked at me with a big smile on their face.

“Sure…” I eyed to board that they had set up without my knowledge, “I… might need some refreshers as we play.

So then we started to play and it was honestly way more fun than I initially expected. The banter back and forth was nice and perhaps I might just go back to these meetings despite our rather hectic introductions.
