Tokata
We’re coming back today to talk about another place in that fantasy world. The Island of Tokata sits on the West side of the Island of Grong, and the east side of the continent of Igrax. It’s pretty small in comparison to Grong, something like about 70-80% of the size, but is still populated nonetheless. Here is our second main group of humans, but there are few things about the island that make it more than just another kingdom.
So what is the geography of the Island? The big thing is that the island is absolutely covered in redwood type forest things. There isn’t really any clearing besides the collection of small towns and the capital city residing on the coast of the island. More often than not, the trees grow so heavily over the landscape that the majority of the island is shrouded in darkness. The towns fare better though as they are saved from the cover of the trees. The climate remains temperate year round meaning that the forest wildlife is constantly able to roam around free while the humans can keep to their routines.
What does that mean for these humans though? While there is some semblance of a unified civilization, each individual town is normally very isolated from the others. Each town has a specialty regarding food, industry, and whatnot, but most are pretty self reliant. People tend to converge in the island’s capital, but mostly for required errands/proceedings. The Island’s biggest export is probably lumber. The trees provide high quality wood that has a very good reputation for being durable and long lasting. Somehow many claim that the exported lumber is never quite as strong as it would be if it had stayed on the island. The island has remained neutral and secluded for most of the world’s history, only recently being introduced to the world when explorers from Igrax arrived. This makes them behind technology wise, but lumber trade has helped them advance to some level of recognizability among the rest of the world. Luckily they do not suffer from people wanting to explore since people just simply do not want to choose Tokata as their vacation spot.
Unfortunately for the people of Tokata, the island isn’t quite as peaceful as many would like to imagine. In the woods lies a lot of supernatural dangers. Dark magic seems to ebb and flow throughout the thick trees, creating a foreboding aura that consumes whatever it touches. Many people who go beyond sanctioned grounds and marked trails come back changed. They have many symptoms ranging from random bouts of aggression, lashing out, bloodlust, and even complete identity shifts. Whatever it was has consumed many of the older towns on the island, leaving many of them in ruins and the rest not even daring to go out and explore in fear of what they may find. At night, terrifying howls and snarls ring throughout the forest as it’s almost like someone or something prowls around at night, waiting to claim unwitting victims. While the main towns have put out calls for assistance, many locals are either too afraid or too ill equipped to handle the requests and thus would rather just stay indoors at night.
I have a little bit of an idea of where I’m going with this, but that is sorta the main hook/point of this place. I really wanted a place that was really creepy to place here. The vibe/architecture style is supposed to emulate older European horror as well as the Magic World of Innistrad. Kinda dark all the time and the citizens are used to being the victims of terrifying circumstances every other week. I’m definitely going to revisit this place as this is one of the places I have the least written down about. And I know I will because one of my important characters is from here so it would be a shame to not flesh it out a bunch. So yeah, thanks for reading this far as always and I will be back tomorrow!
