Con Day 1
Today is the first day of Commandfest Baltimore. Basically it’s a magic convention where the commander format is the main focus. It’s pretty cool because it’s been like years since I’ve been to a real convention style place. So I guess in the interest of keeping the post easily formatted I’ll just say a few things that I’m really excited for.
The LOTR PreRelease. Prereleases are always the most fun time in magic for me now. It’s a point where cards are sent into the wild for the first time for people to play. You open packs and build a whole deck with cards that you’ve never seen before. That’s just been really fun to me. Even with spoiler seasons and leaks all around it’s almost impossible to really know what’s in the set because of just how many cards are there. This set especially since there’s no reprints from other sets, just pure lotr action. I’m especially hyped to play with this set because the power level feels like a step above the average standard set without the need to pack really pushed cards that warp formats. You can feel the love and care the designers had for the world they were drawing from and that just makes the set that much better.
Playing commander with total strangers. Commander is a wild format. We play with some of the most busted cards to accomplish some of the most jank stuff. Sol Ring, a card reprinted 4+ times a year, maintains a price of $2 and is in 90% of the decks you will ever play against. I’ve seen people use their hundreds of dollars worth of lands, mana rocks, and draw engines to kill us with colossal dreadmaws. It’s what makes the format special really. Our card pool is so deep and diverse it makes every deck you play against different. There’s a joy in playing with complete strangers because of this. I always love seeing new people and how their decks pull off interesting synergies or pop off while hopefully being able to do the same with mine. Again, can’t wait to experience that plenty of times this weekend.
The last thing I’m excited about is the Con experience in general. It’s a very unique and fun experience with the best part being I’m going with my friends. Doing things with friends is always fun and we get to do something we all enjoy on top of it. I guess I don’t have much more to say about that, but I don’t really have to. My friends are awesome and anything we do together will be as well.
Nothing more to really say about it, maybe I’ll update on what happened each day as they happen, keep looking out for that. Besides that, thanks for reading up to this point if you have. Besides that one mishap, I’m happy with how I’ve been able to keep it up. That quality of writing is a different topic, but the journey is just getting out and doing it in the first place. So on top of reading what I’ve been writing, why don’t you go out and try to write yourself! You may find it more fun than you anticipated.
