My Favorite Numbers
This post will be a bit of fun one. Numbers are normally pretty boring things. All they do is convey the amount of something. Like we all have a very good idea of what one banana is. What five bicycles are. What four wheels are. The list goes on. We also come to know numbers through how they are used for calculations. Like we know that one plus one is two, except for that really long winded and technical explanation of why that is sometimes not the case. We can understand that six times six is thirty six because six added to six six times is equivalent to thirty six. Wow, do that sentence a million times in your head. Math can also sometimes not be fun. It’s one of the dreaded subjects where we can find ourselves asking why would we ever need to know the derivative of e when we’re just trying to buy some eggs at the grocery store. Where would advanced calculus take us that a very strong grasp of arithmetic math can’t? Unfortunately for me, I can’t really bring a good explanation for that outside of knowing how to calculate things can often be better than not knowing. I won’t try to go any further with the math because personally I’m not really that interested in that stuff and I don’t want to delay the main point of this post any further. There is one thing about numbers that I will have that transcends beyond the need to calculate them. I’m talking about the numbers that I like the most. Note, this is definitely one that will be very subjective, I’ve given a little bit of thought as to how I would like to present this, but I think I will just put forward three numbers that I really enjoy from a variety of angles and I hope that you can understand where I’m coming from when I talk about these numbers. So, without further ado, here are some of my favorite numbers in no particular order.
1: 48
I hope that this is a pretty strong start. There are so many reasons to like the number 48. For me, it started with the old rhyme: six times eight equals forty eight. Ok fine, it’s not exactly a rhyme since we’re rhyming eight with eight, but the point is there. It’s such a clean sounding sentence that uses a very very six sequence of numbers to show how to get forty eight: 4, 6, 8. The two digits also have a lot of relation as well. Two times four is eight. We are also free from any odd numbers in this discussion. There’s nothing much more really to say. 48 is just kind of a really strong number that lands really strongly in the S tier for me.
2: 16
16 is a pretty strong pick for me personally, but probably not for the reason you might be thinking of. Unless of course the reason you’re thinking is because of csgo. In CSGO, to win the game, your team needs to win 16 rounds before the other team. After so many years of playing the game, there is something a little special about that number for me. Whenever I see it, I’m reminded of the times I’ve had playing the game, good or bad. The actual number outside of that is nothing special. It’s a little cool that you can do four times four to get it, but that’s just one out of all of the combinations of a number multiplied by the same number. Though I will admit that four is a pretty cool number. Nothing much more to say, the number would also be in the S tier for me, but not because of its qualities as an actual number, just the memories and feelings I have associated with it.
3: 75
It feels a little weird putting an odd number here since I find myself preferring even numbers way more, but 75 is a pretty cool one. It’s a pretty iconic number as it’s one of the quarters, standing with 25, 50, and 100. Multiples of five look really clean to me because I always know what to expect from them when I see them. Finally, It’s just a good concept to think about. 75% of something means that it’s a good way along and could be done really soon. It means that the last 25% is upon you and it’s almost like you’re about to hit the closing stretch or something. It’s a really nice feeling when I can look at something and say “I’m 75% of the way there.” Nothing too much more to say, this one is definitely more of a “the number makes me feels good” situation as well.
That was a little insight into some of my favorite numbers. Hope that made sense to the people reading this and honestly I kinda enjoyed writing this. Maybe I’ll revisit this, though that probably won’t happen since it felt pretty one and done to me. I can only talk about numbers so long before I start going crazy to be honest. But if you did enjoy that, be sure to leave some feedback and I will be back tomorrow with another post!
Can't believe 0, 1, and 2 didn't make the list, and here I thought you were a computer scientist.
