Stumbling through learning how to play Zerg in Starcraft 2

For the last few days I’ve been diving into the world that is Starcraft 2 1v1 ranked games. It has gone… not so well to be honest, but I’ve still been enjoying it. I think what captivates me about starcraft and other RTS games in general has been the ability to get better. I have the same mindset I would while playing counter strike, noting down the mistakes I’ve made and being able to attempt fixing them in the next game. RTS games like Starcraft really put an emphasis on both sides of the strategy genre: Micro and Macro. Practicing one is easy while practicing both is hard. I’ve been playing Zerg which has a particularly hard macro side that does need a lot of practice. The three big things are larva, creep spread, and overlord production and I’m definitely not going to impress anyone with my skills. Micro is a different thing since most early game zerg units don’t necessarily need that much macro… at least in my rank. I think the best part out of all of this is that despite everything that has happened, I have been learning. I never feel like I lose to stuff that isn’t fair, I’m merely losing to much better skill/speed that I can’t really manage to pull off yet. In fact, most of my losses have just been to superior macro. I set up my early attack which is easily repelled because I was too slow on getting one part of my tech or economy off the ground. This then allows them to counterattack with a larger army before I’m able to rebuild at my base. Right now, the biggest thing I need to work on is being able to grab a third base as the zerg economy really needs it. I also need to start practicing the macro game that happens while an attack wave is out. Delaying the second attack wave/reinforcements means that if the first group dies you can be caught out like I have. Unfortunately, that involves leaving your attack force alone for a little bit to manage stuff back home, which for me can spell disaster for those troops. Again, it’s something that I can definitely get better at which is the fun part for me. I have to say shoutout to Hushang tutorials on youtube, I HIGHLY doubt he would ever see this blog post, but he is the channel I’ve been watching to really begin practicing the basics of zerg and his beginner build order is the one I’ve been using as well. So big thanks to him for giving me some legs to stand on for playing zerg.

Today’s post is kinda short compared to what I’ve been writing the last few days. This is probably because I’ve been feeling especially tired today and I want to use as much energy as possible for working on a different project I’ve started. If it goes somewhere that’s great, if not it’s whatever. So thanks for reading this short ramble and do check out Hushang on youtube if you want some great starcraft tutorials and I will be back tomorrow with another post.
